World Bank Infographics Illustrate Financial Inclusion Efforts

It's necessary to translate dense, yet key, data into an easy-to-read package to reach as many people as possible. Connections Media was able to work with the World Bank to do just that.
Financial inclusion is critical to reducing poverty and encouraging economic growth around the world. In 2011, the World Bank Group and their partners published a comprehensive database known as The Global Findex, which measures how people in more than 140 countries borrow, save, make payments, and manage risks with their money. In the spring of 2015, the Global Findex was updated to shed light on the current state of the participation in the global financial system. The updated data was to be presented at the World Bank and International Monetary Fund’s Annual Spring Meetings, where government officials and thought leaders gather each year to discuss of global development.
The World Bank Financial Inclusion group partnered with Connections Media to make this rich yet dense data more accessible to their broad coalition of world leaders, academics, and policymakers and ultimately to help influencers understand how to alleviate poverty by way of expanding financial access.
With these goals in mind, Connections Media worked closely with the World Bank to translate the data into visual content - highlighting stories of success and identifying opportunities for improvement - in a format that could be easily understood and shared through various media.
Over an accelerated timeline, Connections Media engaged its content and creative teams to produce eight distinct infographics highlighting key narratives within the data. These infographics, which were delivered in conjunction with the Annual Spring Meetings, included:
- Financial Inclusion on an overall global scale;
- spotlights on regional data: East Asia & Pacific, Europe & Central Asia, Latin America & the Caribbean, The Middle East, South Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa; and,
- A concentrated focus on expanding financial inclusion for women and the poor.
In addition, Connections Media designed a set of 15 eye-catching shareable graphics, each featuring a bite-sized factoid from the dataset. These graphics were shared on social media to help promote the Global Findex Portal’s launch and bring awareness to the World Bank’s goal of eliminating poverty through financial inclusion.
In April 2015, the World Bank presented the infographics and updated data at the Universal Financial Access 2020 Panel, as part of their two-day Annual Spring Meetings. Panelists included World Bank President Jim Young Kim, Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-Moon and other key global finance leaders. The Financial Inclusion infographics and shareable graphics were published on the Global Findex portal; several other World Bank channels, including the Data Visualization tumblr; and Global Findex partner channels, such as the Spanish language CGAP and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Facebook page. The global infographic was later translated into Spanish, French, and Arabic.
The reach of the graphics was widespread and lasting. The World Bank Financial Inclusion team shared the graphics to their diverse and international Twitter audience. Much of the engagement around the graphics originated from influencers, such as financial inclusion groups, think tanks, journalists, United Nations initiatives, and partner organizations. In June 2015, the infographic was featured prominently at a United Nations press conference when Her Majesty Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, the United Nations Secretary General’s Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance for Development, included the global infographic in her public address.
